While I don’t expect my actions will change the world, I do believe that it has and will continue making a difference. My goal with the #30WaysToGive project was to figure out ways of how we can give back to my community, while encouraging and inspiring others to do the same.
In a time like today where many people share injustices, racism, greed and negativity on social media, I challenged myself to do opposite – share my stories of giving time, love, positivity and hope. I’m thankful to have achieved my goal and for finding people that shared their support.
My #30 and last post for #30WaysToGive is this:
Give time and love to family. I was able to spend the holiday and weekend with family and I appreciated every moment of it. Any difference we want to achieve in our community, we must first find it within ourselves (post #23), and then within our home.
Got up early to drop off bags of new socks and help with the setup to give clothing and food for the homeless.
A couple of hundred of homeless people were able to get a warm beverage, food, and clothes this Christmas morning.
While I was trying to keep my hands and toes from feeling frozen I saw a homeless lady with no socks. That moment not only made me feel blessed for what I have, but also that I’m able to give back.
Julian may not yet understand the meaning of the words when I say “I love you”, but he understand my actions. Every time I kiss his cheeks, tickle his belly, play with him, feed him, and pick him up when he points his hand out for me, he understands I am there for him. He knows I love him.
With the times he smiles when he sees me, when he looks for me to play, and when gives me big hugs when I pick him up, I know he is telling me something.. He loves me back.
While saying I love you is so easy, showing with actions is something more – it shows you really mean it.

Even when the house was full, thanks for letting me take an entire booth all to myself and taking care of me while I was getting some work done.

In no way is this a contradiction to giving to others, and if you don’t understand this, it is not your time.
One of the best ways you can give to others is to love yourself first – and by that I mean to be healthy in mind, body, and spirit. You must be at peace and truly happy with yourself because only then, what you give to others, including your family, will be genuine. Many people who have no self love attempt to help others, but not only do they hurt themselves even more, they may hurt the other person by dragging them down.
Most of the acts of giving have less to do with money and more to do with time and emotions. If you look at all the people who are giving back, you will notice that they have already achieved a certain level of self love and happiness.
You can not give what you don’t have and if you want to spread love & positivity, you must first find it in yourself.
As soon as I learned about Safyre Terry’s story last week and how her one wish for Christmas was to fill her Christmas tree with cards, I decided to send her a card with a poem.
It’s amazing to see how many people took the time to make her wish a reality. She received enough cards to fill up her tree and then some (hundreds of thousands)! These type of stories are what give me hope.

I had a foster youth assigned to my caseload, who “ran” not long ago, but I will still get texts from. I managed to draw her in with a promise to take her out for her birthday. Why would you do it if she’s not your case any more? I was asked. “You won’t get reimbursed.” Silly pessimists. Someone has to teach our children the world is good. #30waystogive
